A Living Dialogue in Blue

Nele Ost’s evolving botanical installation for In Full Bloom at KMSKA Antwerp

BelgiumGert Voorjans | Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp

Created by Nele Ost for the In Full Bloom exhibition at KMSKA Antwerp, this living installation entered into dialogue with works by Anish Kapoor and Yves Klein through colour, reflection and the perception of space.

A monumental structure of intricately woven hazel embraced nearly a thousand lobelia plants, selected in different stages of growth and flowering. Over the course of the exhibition, new blossoms continually emerged while others faded, allowing the artwork to transform almost imperceptibly from day to day.

The intense blue of the lobelia echoed the surrounding artworks, while the raw, root-like hazel introduced a tactile contrast between earth and immaterial colour. Never entirely complete and never experienced twice in the same way, the installation became a meditation on time, transformation and the fleeting nature of beauty.
